No doubt about it that we are in the swing of summer. Just look at the scorching hot temperatures along the East Coast. New York City has hit the 100 degree mark and shows no signs of getting cooler anytime soon. Seniors have to pay particular attention to these inferno-esque heat waves. That means staying in the shade, drinking tons of water, applying sun screen if you step outside, and taking cool showers and baths. Lets call these common sense safety precautions, the sort of health tips you have known about for the majority of your life.
In order to stay cool, we shouldn't ignore newer gadgets though. We suggest that seniors also take advantage of these innovative ways to beat the heat:
First of all, there is the iPad. In and of itself, the iPad doesn't seem like much of a heat deterrent. However, it's wide range of apps can provide you with essential information on the current temperature and weather forecast for the near future. Thus, iPad users have an upper hand of sorts when pre-planning their day: they can figure when is the best time to go out in the sun and when is the proper time to stay inside. The same goes for iPhone owners or any smart phone user for that matter.
In the midst of summer, air conditioners are a diamond in the rough. Not all of us are blessed with a central air system in our respective living quarters. And reasonably enough, installing a window-unit air conditioner is by no means a senior friendly activity. (Lifting a big, bulky box into a window and then nailing it into the wall requires the strength and eye-hand coordination that many seniors are no longer equipped with.) But do not fret, as there are a number of solid portable air conditioners stacked with senior friendly features. For example, the DeLonghi CF210 8500 BTU air conditioner is easy to cary from room to room and doesn't require a hammer or screws for installation. Just plug it into the an electronic outlet, set the proper temperature, and enjoy the breeze.
While fans don't necessary compete with air conditioners inside a house, mini-battery powered fans are neat little devices to cool you down on the go. Generally speaking, these fans weigh about 3 pounds or less and are ideal to carry around in a bag or even stick in a pocket. They are great for easy hikes, walks, or any other activity that requires you to face the heat. It might not be a bad idea to look for a travel fan with a spray bottle, which enables you to stay cool and stay wet simultaneously.
