The 2011 Hyundai Equus is the Korean carmaker's first foray into true luxury automobiles. It's an impressive one, a car with good performance, handling, great safety features and comparitively low pricing. The 4.6 liter engine produces 385 horsepower, transferred to the rear wheels. It has state-of-the-art suspension controls that use air to adjust ride height and stiffness depending on load and whether the car is in regular or sport mode. Inside, airbags are standard for driver, front passenger, driver's knees, and side curtain airbags to protect everyone in the car from side impact collisions. To help avoid those collisions in the first place, a myriad of technology is built in. For parking, front- and rear-facing cameras help see at bumper-level to avoid hitting other cars, posts, kids, etc. For freeway driving, sensors alert the driver via audible and haptic feedback via the seatbelt if a driver drifts across a lane without signaling. The hard drive-based nav system is also mated to a 17-speaker, 7.1 surround system that works impressively with a rear-seat DVD system and the car's stereo, which has iPod dock integration and has an iPad setup that allows you to set specific car systems and even schedule maintenance appointments via an iPad app (pending approval). Other creature comforts include heated and cooled seats all the way around, a heated steering wheel, and on the higher trim level, even a refrigerated rear console.
