Coffee makers as we know them did not come around until about 125 years ago. This was the first modern method of brewing coffee and consisted of a two-level pot that had a pot where water was poured at the top and then drained through the holes at the bottom into the coffee maker below. This created a wonderfully rich cup of coffee, but was a bit slower than the older method.

My concern with thermal carafes for seniors is that they often have tops that are difficult for my elderly mom to unscrew with her arthritis, and honestly they can be difficult for me to undo at times. She hates the one I have! I was reading the reviews on amazon and this seems to be a common complaint with thermals. I’d also like to add that a bottle brush is required to clean the insides whereas my mom just puts her carafe in the dishwasher. Otherwise, great tips in this article and many things I’d never have thought of. Many Thanks, Susan
