Canon's new GX 1 point-and-shoot digital camera is aimed at advanced amateurs. It has a wide-angle 4x zoom that starts at a nice wide 28mm. It has an optical image stabilizer and built-in electronic level to help you get the straightest shots possible. With a huge 1.5-inch sensor, nearly the size of some digital SLR sensors, and Canon's latest DIGIC 5 Image Processor, low light capabilities are down to an amazing ISO 12,800, something most compact cameras can't even come close to. It can shoot bursts of 14.3 megapixel images at up to 4.5 frames per second. You can shoot in 14-bit RAW_JPEG, and a 3-inch vari-angle LCD with 922,000 dots helps you see the image clearly and compose with ease. There's a dedicated hotshoe on the top to utilize a variety of Canon flash units. Other accessories include a waterproof case, macro lights and more. Plenty of dedicated buttons and dials to make the controls a snap when you want them, to allow for full manual control or any of a number of scene selections or even intelligent auto mode. It shoots 1080p HD video at 24 fps and 720p at 30 fps, and offers HDMI-out so you can directly view your videos on any HDTV. We played with one of these at CES. It feels great in your hand, controls are well placed, and having that lens and sensor combination, plus all the manual controls, in a compact camera is fantastic. It's definitely not a beginner camera, but in the hands of an advanced amateur or pro, it's amazing. A LOT of great features.
