Canon's SX40 HD digital camera offers the feel and look of a digital SLR (DSLR), but it's a bridge camera so it has much of the ease of use of a point-and-shoot camera. The extremely versatile 35x wide angle zoom goes from a class-leading 24mm (35mm equivalent) to a super-long 840mm. The former is perfect for vacation photos, to get in the whole background, the latter will get you up close to anything which is perfect for sports, birds, etc. It's optically stabilized so even with the full telephoto end, it is easier to keep sharp even when handholding the camera. Intelligent IS optimizes the stabilization performance and automatically selects among Normal, Panning, Macro (Hybrid) and Tripod IS modes. It's a Canon-designed lens with their incredible engineering, so your images will be as sharp and crisp as possible. Canon's newest DIGIC 5 image processor gets the most out of the images and does it QUICKLY. It also keeps noise to a minimum even at its maximum 3200 ISO. It shoots 1080p video at 24 frames per second, or 720p at 30 frames per second. There's a dedicated movie button to make it really easy to use for video. There's a built-in wind filter to allow outdoor shooting even in slightly windy conditions to cut wind noise so your audio is crisp and easy to hear. Perfect for hearing every kick at little Jane's soccer game. The large LCD screen on the back is articulated, making it easy to use for really high- or low-angle shots, hand-held self-portraits or just to tilt in a better seeing position in bright sun. Speaking of bright sun, it has an electronic viewfinder if you prefer to look through the camera to frame your shots. There are more special scene modes than I can list here, but it includes full and partial manual, smart auto, portrait, high-speed burst (up to 8 frames per second), stitch assist (for panoramas), fisheye effect, underwater (requires an optional waterproof case, not included), and many, many more.
