The digital transition has finally happened. Amazon, maker of the popular Kindle e-reader, has announced that it is now selling more e-books than hardcover or paperback books. Since April 1, the electronic commerce company has sold 105 Kindle e-books for every 100 printed books. This number is only counting for-purchase books, meaning it doesn’t include e-books that you can download for free. If it did, the number would clearly be much higher in favor of e-books. ComputerWorld notes that Amazon has been selling printed books for the past 15 years, while it only started selling Kindle e-books less than four years ago. Amazon officials said they knew the day would come when e-books would outsell printed books — they just had no idea how fast that day would get here.
