iPad Apps for Seniors: Scrabble

by Max Baumgarten on April 9, 2010

Scrabble, the ultimate family fun board game disguised as a brain game, is now available as an iPad application. The highly-competitive, highly-strategic word game is a great stimulating exercise for the brain, requiring logical reasoning, spatial reasoning, and creativity.

The app comes with all of the essentials — the two letter word list, a Scrabble dictionary, and a chat function for intense Scrabble “smack talking.” You can play with other iPad (or iPhone) users, either friends or just random Scrabble-aficionados. Keep in mind that it is common for loneliness and isolation to accompany old age; Scrabble provides the ideal virtual social interaction. It is also worth mentioning that Scrabble can actually serve as a preventative measure against the contracting Alzheimer’s or help to slow down the disease once it manifests itself.

Like anything else on the iPad, the graphics are nice, big, bright, and bold; perfect for Scrabble players with troubled eyesight. It costs $9.99 to download Scrabble for the iPad; well worth the cost of an intensive spelling workout.
