You might have seen a recent New York Times story that exposed the poor working conditions in Apple’s Chinese factories. Incidents in and near the factory have resulted in many injuries and even a few deaths, leaving many consumers dismayed. That’s why SumofUs.org has started an online petition urging iPhone, iPad and iPod lovers to send a message to Apple that these often dangerous conditions are not okay. The petition garnered 35,000 signatures within its first 24 hours, according to MSNBC. This movement is nicely timed, as the iPhone 5 is expected out later this year. It will be the first Apple product to launch under the company’s new CEO, Tim Cook. No word yet on what Apple plans to do about these working conditions or the petition. Cook did send a letter to employees, however, saying “We care about every worker in our worldwide supply chain... Any suggestion that we don’t care is patently false and offensive to us. As you know better than anyone, accusations like these are contrary to our values. It’s not who we are." We suppose Apple’s “true identity” will be revealed in time, now that these conditions have been brought to its (and the rest of the world’s) attention. Click here to sign the petition.
