Do Seniors Care about Online Privacy Settings?

Do Seniors Care about Online Privacy Settings?
These past few weeks, we have seen a growing concerning with privacy concerns online. Social media mega site Facebook.com recently laxed its default privacy settings, causing a number of users to either customize settings or leave the network entirely. A new Pew report finds that young Internet users are more concerned with online personal privacy than their older counterparts. Specifically, 44% of Internet users ages 18-29 have taken steps to restrict the amount of public information online. For those older than 65, this number drops to 20%. As a New York Times article explains, "users who have more information available online and search for others are more likely to restrict their own personal data. This habit is most pronounced on social networks, where nearly three-quarters of young users have altered their privacy settings, as opposed to just over half of users older than 50." To a certain extent, that explanation makes sense. Though the relatively low rates of senior-concern for privacy restrictions also might be due to the fact that aging adults just don't have the technical knowhow to properly manage these settings. It is not that seniors actively want to share their private information with the internet public, it is just that they aren't all tech-savvy enough to make the proper alterations. If you are a senior signed up for Facebook or another social media site, don't be afraid to customize your privacy setting to satisfy your comfort level. It is essential to embrace social media by taking the proper precautions. Managing Reputations on Social Sites - (The New York Times)
