Entering the Mainstream: Tech for Seniors
It seems as if the main stream press is slowly but surely starting to pay attention to a slew of new gadgets that can help improve the quality of life for aging adults. Case and point: Wall Street Journal's magazine SmartMoney just wrote an article called "Senior Living, Version 2.0." The article points out what avid ElderGadget readers already know: "technology is about to expand through seniors' lives as never before." A lot of this has to do with the fact that baby boomers are entering their golden years, and unlike their older counterparts, this generation understands technology. In fact, 46-64 year-olds have embraced the technology of the day, as 62% of them have an in-home broadband Internet connection; additionally, 43% of the group connects through a wireless service to the Internet. Tech companies have begun churning out products that are changing the way in which seniors interact with, not just technology, but with the world at large. These sort of innovations include a scanner that reads text aloud to help those with diminished eyesight, eyeglasses that can your improve your memory, and shoes that can help you keep your balance. Clearly, the possibilities are endless. Not to toot our own horn or anything, but has one SmartMoney offers one wonderful piece of advice: "To understand the full range of what's available, it's important to go beyond what you see in ads or at your local mall. I recommend reading ElderGadget.com, which offers news and reviews of senior-friendly products." Senior Living, Version 2.0- (SmartMoney)
