Google Revamps the Android Market

Google Revamps the Android Market
It looks like Google has taken a page from ElderGadget by reconsidering the Android Market’s usability. Okay, maybe we can’t take full credit for the move, but it's nice to know that other companies — particularly ones as large as Google — care about a user’s experience and convenience, too. With that in mind, Google is implementing five new features that should make it easier for users to find apps of interest. These features are actually lists aimed to get more apps in front of more people. The New Top App Charts is a country-specific list of the latest and greatest available apps to date. Lists documenting the newest top paid, top free and top grossing apps will accompany this chart on the Android Market homepage. Next, is the Top Developers. Google’s blog says this list will consist of the “highest quality, most popular and most notable apps available.” Initially, about 150 developers will be invited into the Top Developers category, which will be denoted by a special icon. Once you’ve clicked on an app, you’ll now also be greeted with two more sets of recommendations, apps that were viewed by others who also viewed this app, and apps that were installed alongside this app. These categories aim to provide accessories and complementary apps to the one you’re viewing. There’s also the Trending Apps, which are up-and-comers that are gaining momentum. Google notes that there are currently more than 200,000 apps in the Android Market, which have been downloaded a total of 4.5 billion times. And there’s little doubt that this Internet giant believes these lists will lead to even more downloads. These new lists are currently displayed on the web version of the Android Market. Google says they will premiere on tablets and smartphones "soon."
