A new app called Facebook Messenger lets iPhone owners utilize Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, services to connect with friends through Facebook chat. This feature is a lot like Google Voice, in that it took a chat platform that already existed, which was Google Chat, and added an audio component to it.
Facebook chat is a standard feature available to anyone with a Facebook account. You can see which of your friends are online, and can opt to instant message them. By downloading the new Facebook Messenger app, which costs $3, iPhone users can voice chat with others who are utilizing the app.
The VoIP feature can be used even if your friend doesn't have Facebook Messenger. If a Facebook friend is chatting with you from her laptop, Facebook Messenger will send them a link so they can join the voice chat.
This feature could be handy for seniors with poor eyesight. The standard Facebook chat interface is small and boasts a miniscule font.
