Studies show that the older we get, the less we use the internet. While a growing percentage of older adults use the internet, the fact is that someone in their mid 30s is more likely to surf the web than someone older than 65.
Why? It’s not that the elderly don’t want to send out e-mails, connect with old friends via Facebook, or check up on sports scores. Nor is it that they don’t have the mental or physical capabilities; most in fact do. Many just don’t know how to use a computer, or because of monetary restrictions, don’t have proper access. Studies show that the more exposure senior’s have with technology, the more motivated they are to use it.
If internet-usage amongst seniors is to grow, it is up to the younger generation to introduce older-adults to the benefits of an elder friendly web. It’s time to make even more seniors comfortable and familiar with the internet.
