The Supreme Court recently ruled law enforcement officials need to obtain a warrant before utilizing GPS technology to locate a suspect. The nine justices noted that attaching a device to a suspect’s car in order to track their movements violated the fourth amendment, which protects against “unreasonable search and seizure.” What’s really interesting about this ruling is what it may say about the GPS technology used in tracking non-police-installed devices, such as a suspect’s smartphone or tablet.
