Five Best Major Brand LED TVs for Seniors

by Max Baumgarten on October 1, 2009 · 2 comments

LEDs are actually an enhanced LCD screen that uses light-emitting diodes. Generally speaking, LEDs enhance the clarity of the picture because they produce a brighter image with deeper contrasts and blacks than traditional LCDs. The picture enhancement should appeal to seniors with inferior eyesight. For additional information on the differences between plasma, LCD, and LED TVs, read our Senior’s Guide to Plasma, LCD and LED HDTVs.

We tested a number of LED TVs to determine which are elder-friendly. Some of the factors we looked at include crisp sound, low gloss, (relatively) light-weight, simple setup and minimal upkeep.

Though size may also seem like a something to consider, we didn’t actually weigh this feature (no pun intended). This is because we can’t tell you what size works best for you.

For those who are concerned with size, About.com’s Robert Silva has a few words of advice. Silva notes that if you’re planning to buy a 25-inch or 27-inch television, you should be about eight feet away from the set. For a 32-inch TV, you should be 10 feet away, and for a 35-inch or 36-inch TV you should be 11 feet away. You should also have at least 12 feet to 15 feet to work with when installing a 50-inch or 60-inch set. For more information on optimal viewing distance check out the Viewing Distance Calculator.

Now we present to you the top five LED television sets that may best suit the needs of senior television watchers.

The LG 55LH90 is a true standout when it comes to picture quality. The shadows are detailed and the colors are deep and clear. The high contrast allows those with compromised eyesight to stop squinting, and the ergonomically friendly remote is easy to use. We should mention that some complain the sound is a bit garbled but, like we said, when it comes to the LG 55LH90, it’s all about the picture quality.

This gem comes with local backlit dimming LED technology, which, according to the manufacturer, “selectively turns blocks of LEDs off to render perfectly true blacks while others are left on to produce more light in order to express pure whites.” Not a bad function, indeed. We also like the crystal neck swivel stand, which allows you to easily adjust the TV’s direction.

3. Sony Bravia Z Series KLV-40ZX1M 40-Inch 1080p LED Monitor

Sony’s are generally considered to be top notch in the world of televisions. LEDs are no exception. With the Sony Bravia, the back light technology produces both deep blacks and bright whites. For a standard two-speaker system, the sound is quite crisp and clear. From what we could tell the interface is also relatively simple to navigate.

4. Sharp AQUOS LC46LE700UN 46-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV

This Sharp Aquos is known for its superb contrast and brightness. The pixel design allows more light to pass through while minimizing leakage, which means that the image is impressively clear. The inputs are also easy to locate. We should mention the speaker’s aren’t anything to get excited about, so we recommend upgrading the sound system if possible.

5. Toshiba REGZA Cinema Series 55SV670U 55-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with LED Backlight and ClearScan 240, Black

The Toshiba is known for its efficient anti-blurring technology, as well as its accurate color and deep blacks. We found the TV’s set up fairly straightforward, and the inputs on the back are easily accessible.
