GTX Corp and Aetrex Worldwide Develop Shoe to Prevent Wandering

by James Alexander on June 7, 2009 · 1 comment

A shoe-maker and a technology company are teaming up to develop footwear with a built-in Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) device that could help track down wandering seniors who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease. The shoes are being developed by GTX Corp, which makes miniaturized GPS tracking and location-transmitting technology, and Aetrex Worldwide, a footwear manufacturer.

Embedding a GPS device in a shoe could be critical to ensuring the location and safety of Alzheimer’s victims. Many sufferers tend to remove unfamiliar devices from their person, making it difficult to attach other GPS monitors, medical bracelets and other mechanisms that could provide potentially life-saving information to doctors or good samaritans. Alzheimer’s victims do tend to remember how to get dressed, however, making the GPS-embedded shoe perfect for seniors who would otherwise not wear the device or pull the device off during the day.

The concept involves a geo-fence that can be placed around a person’s home and a Google Maps alert that is sent to a cell phone, home or office computer when a pre-set boundary is crossed. The shoe GTX Corp intends to develop with Aetrex should help reduce the stress and anguish felt by the family, friends or caretakers of Alzheimer’s sufferers by enabling them to locate their loved ones instantly with the click of a mouse. Testing on this product will begin later this year. Stay tuned to Eldergadget for news and updates on this and other exciting developments.
