Following on the heels of the Nintendo 3DS release, two French researchers from the Grenoble Informatics Laboratory have created a way for the iPhone and iPad to run 3D apps. The researchers used the devices' front-facing cameras to track the users' heads, thereby creating a glasses-free 3D display. This is the same type of technology principal that is behind Microsoft's Xbox Kinect, which also tracks movements with its sensors and cameras. MSNBC pointed out that this is also the same technology that was demonstrated on the Nintendo Wii a few years ago. The only difference between the 3DS, Nintendo's latest venture into the 3D world, and the 3D apps created on the iPhone and iPad is that the user must keep his head right in front of Nintendo's hand-held device for the 3D effect to be seen. While it may still be a few years away, these demonstrations prove that glasses-free 3D gaming is close to becoming a reality for Apple's most popular gadgets.
