Travel Tips for Seniors: Dealing with Gadgets on the Go

by Max Baumgarten on June 29, 2010

A few days a way from the first of July and it is safe to say we are in the full swing of the summer season. The heat, the sun, the long days, the reruns on T.V. have all become part of our daily routine. Some of us will also be lucky enough to have the opportunity to go traveling before the end of the season.

For seniors that plan to pack their bags and travel a bit, we want to provide you with some travel tips (courtesy of the New York Times) to manage gadgets while on the go. Hopefully these suggestions will help you have a more efficient, safer, and enjoyable trip.

Pack an iPad – Consider the iPad the ultimate travel companion for seniors. You can read a book, skim a magazine, write an email, or watch a movie. We should also mention that the iPad weighs very little (1.5 pounds to be exact) so you won’t even feel the burden of lugging it around.

Invest in Noise Canceling Headphones – Don’t underestimate the importance of owning noise canceling headphones. For planes, trains, or other forms of transportation, you can listen to your music or watch movies in peace. This is particularly important for seniors who have poor hearing and find themselves constantly distracted by ambient noises.

Make Cheap Calls Abroad – Chances are you might have an old cellphone lying around the house. Before you leave call you provider and ask them to “unlock” your phone for you. When you get to your new destination, buy a local SIM card and you will have the ability to make local calls cheaply.
